Tracking User Engagement Signals That Actually Matter

Most analytics tools give you page views and session counts. But if you’re trying to drive revenue from a free product, you need to track engagement signals that correlate with purchase intent.

Vanity metrics vs. revenue signals

Page views tell you someone visited. But did they do anything meaningful? Revenue signals look different:

  • Depth of usage: How many core features did they interact with?
  • Collaboration signals: Did they invite teammates?
  • Return frequency: Are they building a habit?

Building your signal framework

Start by mapping your product’s “aha moments” — the actions that correlate with conversion. Then instrument tracking around those specific events.

The goal isn’t more data. It’s the right data at the right time.
